Everyone throws around "termite-resistant" and "low-maintenance" when they talk about blackbutt decking, but ask five people what those words actually mean and you will get five different answers. This video sorts that out. Blackbutt timber decking comes from Eucalyptus pilularis, a hardwood species grown along the NSW coast. It's rated Class 1 durability, sits around 9.1 on the Janka hardness scale, and unlike most decking timbers, it's one of the few that carries a BAL-29 bushfire rating. That last point matters a lot more than people realise if you are building anywhere near a bushfire zone. We also go through the two mistakes almost everyone makes: mixing up "resistant" with "proof" when it comes to termites, and what actually happens to the colour of the timber once you stop keeping up with the oiling cycle (spoiler: it's not ruined, but it's not what most people expect either).
